LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — The number of cases from a measles outbreak continues to rise and doctors reiterate it may be a record-setting year for the disease. So far this year, there have been 228 cases, with 17% of patients ending up in the hospital. Texas is reporting 198 cases and one death. All but five of those (193) are unvaccinated or unknown. New Mexico is reporting 30 cases and one death. All are unvaccinated or unknown. Measles is a highly contagious virus and it is almost certain the number of patients will keep growing. After a cough or sneeze, the virus can stay in the air for up to two hours. Unprotected, you have a 90% chance of becoming sick after exposure. And as doctors are seeing, about 20% of cases end up in the hospital.
